What I Do

Content and Line Editing

The level of edit you require can vary widely depending on your manuscript. Contact me to determine what services you need. When I edit your manuscript, I will:

  • Perform two editorial passes of the manuscript.

  • Look for opportunities to strengthen your writing sentence by sentence.

  • Correct stylistic issues, watching for awkward phrasing, overused words, ambiguity, and inconsistencies.

  • Suggest changes to enhance clarity.

  • Establish consistency in usage, punctuation, numbering, etc.

  • Suggest rewrites as needed to enhance continuity in content and style.

  • Provide basic fact checking.

  • Record editorial choices on a style sheet that will be shared with you when the edited manuscript is delivered.

  • Create a timeline of your plot.

All edits and queries will be completed using Microsoft Word.

Copyediting

Proofreading

If you’ve already had your manuscript edited, your final step before publication is proofreading. This consists of:

  • Correcting spelling and punctuation errors (which often creep in during the editing process).

  • Correcting minor grammatical errors.

  • Checking for misplaced line and page breaks.

  • Checking pagination and note numbering.

(Proofreading does not include fact checking, rewriting, consistency of story or descriptions, or suggestions for improving the writing. Proofreading should be done on the final draft of the edited manuscript.)

Manuscript Evaluation

Before committing yourself to a full edit, have your manuscript evaluated. This is a “big picture” analysis of a portion of your work, intended to help you make improvements before contracting with an editor. A basic manuscript evaluation includes:

  • An in-depth reading of the first 30 pages (up to 7500 words) of your manuscript.

  • An analysis of your point of view, story structure, pacing, and plot development.

  • An examination of your characters, their development, and their descriptions.

  • A list of recurring mechanical errors.

After a manuscript evaluation, I will provide a thorough written review and sample style sheet to help you continue to refine your manuscript.

Please note: This is NOT a developmental edit. A manuscript evaluation provides a basic overview of potential problem areas of your manuscript.

Transcription

I provide transcription services mainly for personal and family history projects. This can include interviews, oral histories, journals, etc.

For audio, I will provide near-verbatim transcription formatted to meet your needs.

For text, I provide copy typing for hand- or type-written documents. The text will be typed into Microsoft Word and formatted consistently. This can be done verbatim or with mechanical corrections made to spelling and punctuation.

Samples of audio and text are required before I can give an accurate time and cost estimate for all transcription services.

Client Testimonial

“The final draft of my manuscript was recently edited by Krissy at Little Syllables. For anyone looking to take that next all-important step with your WIP, I would highly recommend her! Waiting for a manuscript edit can be quite difficult but Krissy made the process easy.  As soon as she had my manuscript in her hands she checked in with me often to keep me in the loop on her progress. I never had to guess or worry about when I'd get my manuscript back, and once completed, I was very impressed with how thorough she was. Trust me when I tell you that giving Krissy a bit of time with your work will ensure it'll get noticed by publishers and readers alike for all the right reasons.”
